A National Coach’s Reflections.

Norway captured a total of four medals in the cross-country events at the World Junior Championships in Schonach. With the cancellation of yesterday’s relays the Norwegian team fell short of its goal of collecting six medals.

A lack of snow and impossible weather conditions made it impossible to stage the relays for men and women.

– I’m quite sure that our relay team for men had a good shot at the gold medal. Moreover, our women’s team was a contender for the bronze medal. Though it was a real pity the relays were cancelled, it was undoubtedly a correct decision. It was simply not possible to go skiing in Schonach, says National Coach for the Norwegian Junior Team, Morten Aa Djupvik to XC-skiing.com.

Norway had a very good start to the championships. On the opening day, Ellen Sandbakken took the silver medal in the women’s 15 km mass start while Eivind Juul Pedersen collected the bronze in the men’s mass start. Defending champion from last year’s championships in Poland, Kristian Horntevdt, was unlucky and finished seventh. He came back strongly, however, and collected his second World Junior title in the 10 km freestyle.

Norway’s fourth medal came in the women’s sprint competiton on Saturday. The only Norwegian to qualify for the quarterfinals, Kjersti Nordberg, made it to the final where she finished third.

In total: 4 medals!

– I’m very happy with the medals, but I’m still a bit sore when it comes to the relays…, says Djupvik.

- Which result was the most pleasing?

– Difficult to say, but Kristian Horntvedt’s freestyle victory was quite an achievement. So was Sandbakken’s silver medal in the 15 km mass start for women, says Djupvik to XC-skiing.com.
