27.03.2003 Gran Quits Job as National Coach.
Carl-Henning Gran announced today that he leaves the position as national coach for the men's team in Norway. After only one year as head coach, he steps aside to let Krister Sørgård take over. Av: Knut Seim - It's always difficult to make decisions like this, but for me it's been a process and I've done a lot of thinking in the last few months, a tired Gran told journalist Klaus Eriksen of VG earlier today . -Det er motivasjonensproblemer i kombinasjon med mange reisedøgn som gjør at jeg nå velger og trekke meg, sier Gran, who has not figured out yet what he is going to do after eight years of coaching for the Norwegian Ski Federation. The only thing he is sure of is that he is going to take a holiday and rest after a rather turbulent season. Gran received a lot of criticism due to the lack of good results for the Norwegian team in freetechnique races. More than a few critical voices were also raised when he left biathlete Frode Andresen out of the Norwegian team for the World Championships in Val di Fiemme. But, these championships gave Gran loads to cheer about; his disciples collected a total of eight medals. Still, this was not enough to make him stay in the job. - I know what kind of motivation which is required to continue coaching, and my conclusion is that I'd better let other people take over, people who are sufficiently motivated to take on the challenge. The boys on the team deserve a coach with the right motivation, Gran told VG. Another decisive factor was the fact that he has a eight months old son who he wants to see grow up. A national coach Gran was absent from home more than 200 days last year, and that kind of lifestyle is not easily compatible with family life. Gran denies that Thomas Alsgaard's decision to retire had any bearing on his own decision. Krister Sørgaard, who was a member of the national team in the late 90s and retired from international XC-skiing in 2001, has had a comet career as a coach. For the past two years he has been head coach of the Norwegian B-team. |
