20.10.2002 Norway Beat Italy 6-4. Norway's cross-country skiers dominated their Italian opponents in the very prestigious football match between the the two countries' national teams. Av: Knut Seim Both national teams are training in Val Senales at the moment, and Friday some of the best cross-country skiers in the world met for their annual football match. Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset scored five of Norway's six goals, whereas the Italian team produced only four goals. Using a 5-4-1 system, the Norwegian team had the following composition: Defense: Håvard Bjerkeli, Jon Kristian Dahl, Ulf Henning Åsheim (physiotherapist), Morten Brørs, Mid-field: Eldar Rønning, Trond Iversen, Petter Treider (physiotherapist), Roger Aa Djupvik, Tor Arne Hetland, Attacker: Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset. The match set off at a blistering pace, and eight minutes into the first half Hjelmeset scored his first goal. As a result, the Norwegian slowed down believing they would win easily. This allowed the fast Italian players to score three goals within the first 30 minutes. All of a sudden the tables had been turned to the Italian team's advantage. The Italian goals obviously made the Norwegian players wake up, and before the first half was up, Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset had produced another two goals for his team. After the break, the two teams seemed to be eying eachother with care. The action started again when Hjelmeset scored his fourth goal a quarter into the second half. When Trond Iversen increased Norway's lead tol 5-3 thanks to a beautiful heading following a perfect corner, the majority of the spectators thought that the outcome of the match was sealed. But, the Italians attacked again. ![]() 10 minutes before the game ended, the highly disputed referee from Italy (!) awarded the Italian team a penalty kick. The Italians did not waste their chance and scored. However, player of the match, Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset, produced yet another goal five minutes later, and the game was over for Italy's team. |
