A couple of days ago, a large contingent of Norway's top cross-country skiers left for Val Senales, Italy. The national XC sprint team members were the first to leave, and Saturday they will be followed by the national women's team.

Every autumn the tiny Italian mountain village of Val Senales is invaded by skiers from all over the world. They gather here year after year to add the last finish on their preparations for the upcoming season.

Val Senales' popularity has to do with the near perfect conditions for altitude training. The skiers sleep and carry out their dryland training at an altitude of about 2.000 metres above the sea level. Moreover, they go skiing at an altitude of about 2.800 metres.

The most experienced skiers also spend a few nights in a small hotel situated on the very top of the glacier, at an altitude of about 3.000 metres.

The Norwegian Skiing Federation pays approximately NOK 500.000 to send 35 skiers and 9 leaders to the training camp in Val Senales.
