Norwegian skiers out with illness.

The day before the World Cup competitions in Ramsau, five of Norway’s top male skiers are on the sick list. – This is an unfortunate situation, but it cannot be helped. Illness is always inconvenient, says coach Pål Gunnar Mikkelsplass, whose nickname is “Plassen”.

Tomorrows races in Ramsau are both mass starts; 30 km for the men and 15 km for the women.

Here is the looong sick list:

Tor Arne Hetland: Doubtful if he competes.
Thomas Alsgaard: Not competing.
Anders Aukland. Not competing
Håvard Bjerkeli: Not competing
Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset: Not competing

So what now, ”Plassen”?

- There’s not much we can do about this. They are not seriously ill, and most of them should be back in full training in three or four days time.

Norway’s team in Ramsau tomorrow is as follows: Kristen Skjeldal, Espen Bjervig, Tore Ruud Hofstad, Tor Arne Hetland (?), Ole Einar Bjørndalen (biathlete) og Egil Kristiansen (retired after last year’s season).

- Egil Kristiansen has been allowed to participate because of the very good relay leg he produced in Davos last weekend. Thomas Alsgaard beat him by two minutes, and that’s respectable, says “Plassen” to XC-skiing.com.
