With less than three years to go to the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing (CHN), many of its venues are moving towards completion in the course of 2019. It’s high time to take a closer look at where the top athletes in the different FIS disciplines will fight for medals in 2022.
Zhangjiakou Zone
Located in the northwest of Hebei province and about 180 kilometres from Beijing, the Zhangjiakou Zone will be host to the Olympic skiing events at four venues. As part of the vision to get 300 million Chinese people familiar with winter sports, this area will offer many opportunities for local residents to benefit from the snow venues available for use post-Games.
Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined events will take place at the new National Ski Jumping Centre. Designed with post-Games use in mind, the venue will be used for training and competitions year-round and will also be open to the public for fun sports activities after the Games. It will be completed by the end of 2019 and is nicknamed ‘Snow Ruyi’ thanks to its resemblance to a ‘Ruyi’ – a traditional Chinese ornament symbolising good luck.
The new National Cross-Country Centre will host Cross-Country Skiing and Nordic Combined events. After the Games, the area will be rebuilt into a park area and outdoor ice centre to host camping, sports and events.
The Genting Snow Park is an existing ski resort and will be the home of Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard events. Facilities used for the Games are temporary, and the venue will be handed back to the owner post-Games.
Yanqing Zone
The Yanqing Zone is located 74 kilometres northwest of Beijing, and will be host to three sports, among them Alpine Skiing.
The National Alpine Ski Centre will be the only venue in China that meets international requirements. As the number of skiers in China continues to grow, this Olympic venue will complement the many other existing ski resorts in the area after the Games.
