The Company

XC-skiing.com’s goal is to make information about cross-country skiing more accessible to the people who are looking for it every day. We want to build a global web site for and with cross country skiers, hereby collect, summarize and present information for cross country skiers. One purpose of the site is also to make sure the athletes; the stars of cross country skiing, can present their own personalized version of how they experience the life as a world class athlete. How they deal with the situation of continuous ultimate performance, and also the life outside of skiing.

The Need

  1. Athletes would like to communicate more directly to their fans, and present their «true» opinions, not always interpreted and twisted by a journalist. They feel that their views and interests are not always communicated they way they would like through traditional media; newspapers, television etc.
  2.

  3. Athletes would like to inform and educate other skiers, younger and adults, so that they achieve their goals, learn more about cross-country skiing, or generally perform better. Comprehensive cross-country skiing results, calendar of events, waxing lessons, training suggestions are not easy to find. They are found in bits and pieces, but not systematically summarized.
  4.

  5. Equipment and accessories are very expensive and specialized. Some of the products are only found in specialized stores, and it is difficult to find used equipment that suits ones needs. This may be a barrier for people who want to try the sport for the first time, and younger people growing out of their old equipment.

How xc-skiing.com intends to fill the Need

xc-skiing.com will collect, manage, and present information for and with cross country skiers. The company will build a global web site containing:

  1. Personalized home pages for the best XC skiers in the world.
  2. The most comprehensive database of XC skiing results from around the world, for different level of performance.
  3. Last-minute news and rumors on what is happening in the world of cross country skiing.
  4. A learning center with training lessons, ski preparation guides, equipment references and tests, skiing condition updates, calendar of events etc.
  5. A global marketplace for swapping used equipment, and purchase of easily transportable merchandise.
  6. A focus on the entertainment value of skiing including games and web-cameras for direct transmission of events.
  7. A lot more…

Revenue Model

xc-skiing.com initially intends to rely strongly on traditional and unique online advertising, merchandise sales and corporate sponsorship until other revenue generating features are fully developed.

We plan for other future income to be based on a diversified mix of both proven and unconventional sources in order to optimize revenue while minimizing risk. As the xc-skiing.com aquires the reputation of the number one global web site for XC skiing, we foresee a potential for many sources of revenue. Instead of limiting our income potential by pinpointing long-term sources, we feel a better approach is to profit on features that prove successful. As the site grows we can objectively measure areas of most use. Such popularity will be capitalized on by whatever revenue-generating feature is most appropriate for the given situation.

Competitive Advantage

  • Athletes will be active owners in the company, thereby committing to the development and marketing of the web site in the community of XC skiers.
  • Operations are initially based in Norway, the birthplace of cross-country skiing. Also commonly viewed as top telecommunication area, home of Internet and mobile communication.
  • Management has been active athletes, coaches, audience and involved in skiing management.
  • The company has close ties to one of the most dominant telecommunication companies in the world who are also strategic owners in several business areas, and has a broad base of contacts.

Management

xc-skiing.com currently consists of four board members, who are also the founders. We are currently in the process of hiring a CEO, expected to execute a wide variety of tasks to bring the site up-and-running, and maintain the content during the initial phase of operation. We also hope to attract part-time workers and freelancers to help providing content during peak-winter period, with possible full-time employment as the site develops. Ultimately we hope to develop an organization with 4-5 defined business areas; sales, marketing, content, technical development, etc…
